Males are usually represented by squares on a pedigree chart, and females are represented by circles. If the circles are empty, this means that person is not carrying the trait we're looking for. If the circles or squares are filled in, it means that person carries the trait we're looking at. For example, if we're looking at hemophilia, a filled-in circle or square would indicate that the person has hemophilia. We can also show that someone carries a trait but doesn't actually have the trait by shading in half of their circle or square. These people are called carriers. Relationships on family trees are indicated by lines. A horizontal line between a male and a female indicates that those two people are married. If you look to the right, you'll see that we have two people who are married, and then there's a bracket that represents their children. They have two girls and one boy, represented by circles and a square. Additionally, there are Roman numerals off to the right. Roman numeral one means that these are the parents, the first generation, and Roman numeral two means that these are the children, the second generation.
